Common questions about how the imgi.io word counter works.
How is word count calculated?
Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines) and counting non-empty groups. This works best for space-separated languages like English, Spanish, and French. For Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai, use the character counts instead — these languages do not use spaces between words.
How are characters counted?
All Unicode characters are counted, including letters, digits, spaces, punctuation, and symbols. We also show a separate count without spaces so you can see just the visible text characters.
What is script-level text analysis?
Script-level analysis groups characters by their Unicode writing system. Latin letters (A-Z, accents), CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), Arabic script, Devanagari (Hindi, Sanskrit), numbers, punctuation, and symbols are each counted separately. This helps you understand the composition of multilingual text.
How are sentences counted?
Sentences are detected using sentence-ending punctuation from English ( . ! ? ), Chinese ( 。！？), Arabic ( ۔ ؟ ), Devanagari / Hindi ( । ), and several other scripts. For informal text like chat messages that lack ending punctuation, each non-empty line is counted as one sentence.
Does my text get uploaded anywhere?
No. All counting runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device — there is no server step, no API call, and nothing to log.
